Sweater Weather

It’s almost fall in New England and you want to plan at least one foliage trip, right? But what to pack so you stand out from the great colors not only in the woods but on city streets? Here’s what our fashionable traveler, Carson Kressley, has to say.

Okay people. There's a reason they call the fall season "sweater weather." Sweaters really are the key piece of clothing for the season.

For both men and women, a great sweater in cuddly cashmere or durable wool (no cotton please - those are for chilly spring and summer nights) will provide the warmth and coziness needed to kick the crisp fall air. The runways have been literally flooded with sweaters of every type and color, but more importantly TEXTURE is the trend this fall. Look for luxurious cable knits, rugged fisherman’s sweaters and oversized cardigans to stand out from the boring flat knits of seasons past. Here's how I would put these sweaters to work this season:

For Women: A weekend in country, maybe apple picking or copyright All Rights Reserved by Christine Andersonhiking through the gorgeous fall foliage, pair a chunky long cardigan with jeans and tall leather riding boots (no heels please) or even a hiking or military boot. Wear it with a turtleneck and the look is complete. The cardigan can act as a lightweight jacket in this case. You could also toss on a textured oversized scarf in a fun color for added warmth and pizzazz.

In the city for a day at the flea market or a romantic stroll in the park, you could use the same cardigan, over a black turtleneck and black leggings. A suede or studded booty with a nice size heel (or even studded flats if your feet protest!) will give the look an urban edge. Belt the cardigan at the waist with a statement belt that works with he boots and you’ve got a look that is very chic, sophisticated and comfortable.

For Men: The sweater is the new sport coat. For the country, a handsome cardigan or fisherman’s sweater will work well with jeans and boots. Take the same cardigan and add a white button down with a slim wool tie and jeans with loafers and you've got city chic too.

Take it from Carson, you'll love the looks!
