Here’s a great new way to save dramatically on travel costs. If you’re on Facebook, join your favorite hotels’ fan pages. Many hotels and resorts announce special deals to their Facebook fans and some actually have offers that are available to their Facebook fans ONLY.
An outstanding example is The Balsams Grand Resort in northern New Hampshire, one of New England’s grand hotels that dates back to 1875. They recently offered their Facebook fans a special “Stay Two Nights and Get a Third One Free” deal.
While that may not sound that impressive, you need to know what “one night” at this historic resort actually means. In addition to the accommodations, in winter, it includes (for all members of the family) breakfast and a five-course table d’ hote dinner daily plus unlimited downhill skiing on their own mountain, cross-country skiing (as well as snowshoeing and skating). There are also other activities throughout the day (kids programs, ice sculpture demonstrations, art lessons, ski waxing clinics…) and nightly entertainment (movies, comedy shows, dancing, lectures, as well as air hockey tournaments and billiards among other diversions in a power-packed game room). Come summer, it’s all about the great outdoors. There’s hiking, canoeing, kayaking, fly fishing, golf, tennis, a pool…you name it.
But you don’t need a Facebook deal to justify visiting the Balsams. The resort—which is included in the National Register of Historic Places—is set in the White Mountains, surrounded by 15,000 acres of wilderness. It also has quite a lofty political claim to fame. Every presidential election, the residents of the tiny hamlet of Dixville Notch are the first in the nation to be permitted to cast their votes and announce their vote totals. It takes place at midnight in the Ballot Room every four years.
