Exotic beach resorts and tropical bungalows rely on a sense of adventure, romance and seclusion to attract visitors. Ironically, you can get a small dose of that on Wall Street, whose barren night scape and cavernous streets now act as an oddly adventurous backdrop to a new, stylish hotel.
The Andaz Wall Street, a property of Hyatt's boutique brand, is a balanced serving of simple sophistication and comfort. Its sleek, modern aesthetic, created by the Rockwell Group design firm (W Union Square and Nobu), is center-pieced by a pearlescent steel and stone staircase. Guest rooms are modern, but homey --- textured walls, black marble bathrooms and metal artwork fabricated in a Queens workshop, are complimented by exposed oak floors and buttery brown headboards. Even the market-to-table restaurant, Wall + Water, which sources the ingredients for its comfort foods from the Hudson Valley, is simple and elegant.
There is something intimate about being in the vacated power center of the island after the day tourists have moved on and workers have gone home. You still have the city at your fingertips: great dining, wonderful shows, the kinetic energy. But the new Andaz also provides a retreat, a way to feel the serenity of home. It is just quite surprising to find it in the solitude and romance of Wall Street at night.
