Ever wonder what would happen if you got seriously ill or injured on a trip? Would your travel insurance policy or credit card benefits pay for you to be returned to your hospital at home? Chances are they won’t.

So what are you options? Be hospitalized far from home away from family and doctors you may know? Pay to be medically evacuated?  Not if you take a look at the going-rate pricetags. Medical flights within the US run at least $8,000 and when you’re talking about travel abroad, it can be in the neighborhood of $70,000 from London and $160,000 from parts of Asia.travel insurance, trip insurance

Since you really can’t control medical emergencies, it’s nice to know you can control how it would be handled should anything serious happen while traveling.

You can do this by purchasing an emergency medical evacuation membership through a provider such as MedjetAssist.

If you’re more than 150 miles from home and find yourself hospitalized, they’ll provide completely staffed air-ambulances to get you home, to the hospital of your choice.

The annual program costs $250 for an individual and $385 for a family (two spouses and up to five dependents under the age of 19 or a full-time student).

They also offer some short-term memberships if you travel infrequently.
